You are visiting the home of a unique farm-to-fork food retailer, and possibly the only example – in the world – which slaughters, prepares and sells locally sourced meat via its on-site abattoir, food hall, and fully licensed cafe bar and restaurant. Friendly and knowledgeable staff combine with a modern and spacious shop interior to help give customers a unique shopping experience. A large meat counter provides a huge range of freshly made sausages, bacon and pork, chicken, lamb, and beef. The shop also has a delicatessen which offers a wide range of local cheeses, salads, pies, breads, and cakes. You can even have a delicious sandwich made - on freshly baked bread - while you wait. Or, you can order a piping hot soup-of-the-day to take away. On the same site you will find 1817 - a fully licensed cafe bar and restaurant which serves fine quality foods together with a selection of beers, ciders, and award-winning English and Scottish wines All our beef and lamb is slaughtered in our own EC approved, on-site abattoir. Also, we run - on a voluntary basis - the Small Abattoir Federation (SAFe) which provides support and guidance for other businesses that operate their own low-throughput abattoirs. CAR PARKING - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We have listened to our customers' comments regarding our private car parking facilities. In the past, many of our customers had been unable to find parking spaces - especially on Fridays and Saturdays - and had no alternative but to drive away without shopping with us. This was due mainly to individuals who had parked their vehicles to go and shop elsewhere in the village. So, back in March 2005, we decided to begin monitoring our car park to ensure that spaces were always available for our customers. Today, we employ Tom as our car park assistant. He patrols our car park all day, every day, and is always ready to warmly greet customers and help them with any enquiries. For more information, please click here. You may or may not be aware that major water mains replacement works are planned for the High Street / School Lane / Preston Road junction. This work is due to commence on Saturday 21st March 2009 and, according to United Utilities, will last for approximately 12 weeks. Please note that the High Street is NOT closed, although it will be reduced to one lane.

Countryside Alliance Awards 2008 (7th February 2009)

We are delighted to announce that we have been nominated for a Countryside Alliance Award in the category of Best Traditional Business. On Saturday 14th March, the Daily Telegraph will reveal the winner of Best Traditional Business in its Weekend supplement.  Then, on Wednesday 18th March, the winners' reception at the House of Lords will see all regional winners come together to celebrate their success and hear the winners of the other categories. We are very pleased to announce that our 1817 Valentine's Menu is ready for you download. To get it, click here now! We think you'll agree that this is a splendid, value-for-money menu. All meals will be made fresh to order using locally-sourced meat.

Oz and James Drink to Britain (10th January 2009)

aDon't forget to watch the second episode of Oz and James Drink to Britain this coming Tuesday (13th January) on BBC2 at 8 pm. This week, Oz and James visit Standish's own Prospect Brewery , home to probably the smallest commercial brewery in the world, run by Patsy Slevin out of her mother-in-law's garage. The brewery is just a stone's throw away from our shop, and we sell a wide range of Prospect's bottled ales.
