Small Business Champions 2004 ::
A Trip to New York |
Now in its 4th year and seeking
its 2005 winner, British
Small Business Champions -
sponsored by the Federation
of Small Businesses (FSB),
Lloyds
TSB and the Mirror
Group newspapers -
provides a showcase to celebrate
the outstanding achievements of
British small businesses, and to
recognise the success of
entrepreneurs.
The winner of British Small
Business Champions 2004 was Noel
Chadwick Ltd, and part of the
winner's prize was a tailor-made
trip to New York to visit the
sights and meet similar small
businesses.
John Chadwick - and wife Maureen - flew to New York for this
5-day trip. This is a brief
account of their stay.

New York City
In
between visiting other
meat producing
businesses, John and
Maureen visited the
various sights and
sounds of New York.
These included Central
Park, Times
Square, the Empire
State Building
(by helicopter), Brooklyn
Bridge, and Ground
Zero - a
sobering experience
according to John.
John and Maureen also
managed to squeeze in
some shopping, visiting
department stores such
as Tiffany & Co and
Macy's. |
 |
The main purpose of the trip,
however, was to visit other
similar businesses to gain an
appreciation of how they work
and to exchange ideas. Two
businesses worthy of mention are
Lobels and Esposito
Sausage.
|
Lobels [top]
Lobels
is a family run butchers
shop based on Madison
Avenue.
Although Lobels sell their
meat directly to
customers through their
shop, much of their
trade is accounted for
from on-line,
Internet ordering.
Lobels also sell a range
of merchandise - such as
recipe books and knife
sets - together with
gift vouchers.
|
 |
John came away from Lobels very
impressed, and intends to look
into selling his own produce and
merchandise via the Noel
Chadwick Web site.

Espositio Sausage [top]
Esposito
Sausage
is also a family run
business.
Founded back in 1933, Giovanni Esposito and Son's was
founded as a fresh meat and poultry butchers shop in the same
New York City location where it stands today.
However, as the
popularity of their
sausages grew, the
business evolved into a
wholesale manufacturer
of quality sausages.
John and Maureen were
shown around the plant
as it made a range of
sausages including
Cheese & Parsley,
Pepper & Onion, and
Broccoli Rabe &
Mozzarella.
|
 |
Again, John came away impressed,
with lots of ideas for new
sausage flavours of his own.
